A princess is born to the king and queen of a fairy-tale kingdom. The wicked witch, who resents not having been invited to the princess's birthday party, curses her: on the day the princess turns 16, she will be pricked by the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall into eternal sleep. The king orders that all spinning wheels in the kingdom be destroyed and the number 16 be taken out of use. However, a young traveling prince arrives, bringing a curse with him.

The Russian Descendant of the Snow Leopard is based on a famous Kirghizian folktale. Apparently the Kirghizian folks had plenty of time to tell this story: to print a full synopsis would result in a novelette. Essentially, the story involves a proud group of highland hunters called the Snow Leopards, who in order to survive a brutal winter must request help from the Lowland people. The price for this assistance is the hand of the Snow Leopard's daughter, who is promised in marriage to a wealthy Lowland trader. During the Springtime wedding celebration, the trader becomes fascinated by a stranger who wins all the athletic contests. This "male" contestant turns out to be a woman, who has arrived to seek freedom for her imprisoned husband. The subsequent romance between the trader and the beautiful stranger results in disaster and bloodshed for both the Snow Leopards and the Lowlanders.

Jane, selfish and arrogant, is carried away with her own vanity and anticipation of making a "hit" and being the belle of the evening. Cinderella, her sister, looks at her simple and ordinary drew, which is the best of her limited wardrobe, and says she will have to wear it or stay at home. Jane says she will look like a "frump," and be out of place, anyway. Poor Cinderella decides to remain at home. Mrs. Marvin, an elderly visitor, happens into the room and Cinderella, always kind and thoughtful, makes the old lady comfortable. She is attracted to the display of Jane's finery and asks the reason. Cinderella tells her all about the reception.
