When the young Texas Ranger, John Reid, is the sole survivor of an ambush arranged by the militaristic outlaw leader, Butch Cavendich, he is rescued by an old childhood Comanche friend, Tonto. With the help of Tonto, the pair go to rescue President Grant when Cavendich takes him hostage.

Hickok moves through a variety of uniquely authentic western locations - dim, filthy, makeshift taverns; freezing, slaughterhouse-like frontier towns and beautifully desolate high country - before improbably teaming up with a young Crazy Horse to pursue the creature.

Heyes rushes to the town and sees Curry in the audience; the man on trial is an impostor who didn't commit the murder he's accused of. Originally a longer duration episode of the TV series Alias Smith and Jones (1971). It occasionally appeared in syndication as a TV movie, under its own name, with the series title bluntly edited out of the regular series' opening credits.

Hickok is aided every step of the way by Tex Rawlings, a seemingly harmless drifter who is appointed sheriff after proving his prowess with his six-guns.
